A Guide To Some Cyrix Processors
5x86 / MediaGX

  • General overview

Originally a fabless microprocessor design team, Cyrix merged with National Semiconductor in the second half of 1997. National Semi's plan is to concentrate on the budget range (notably MediaGX), but Cyrix intends to continue the research and design of cutting edge processors so as to provide a logic core for future budget processors to use.

  • The Cyrix 5x86 processor

This processor fits into a 486 socket. This is the predecessor of the 6x86 and was Cyrix's version of the AMD X5. The 5x86 core design was later used to power the MediaGX series of integrated processors.

  • The Cyrix MediaGX processor

The MediaGX processor incorporates multimedia and system functions right on the CPU. This new architecture helps PC manufacturers to deliver low-cost systems with the features and performance of much more expensive multimedia PCs.
The processor provides equivalent performance at the same MHz as a Pentium® processor. The MediaGX System establishes a new class of low-cost, high-performance desktop and notebook PC computers. This system eliminates the traditional audio and video cards, and all AT motherboard components of a PC.
