General tips for GA628

I'm not an expert user, thus I have not tried as many phones as some of you out there. So I can only give advice for GA628 users. Some of these tips may apply to other models as well...

  1. Save a Missed Call into your phone directory
    1. Scroll to "MissedCall", press "Yes" to display the required number. Press any number (i.e. 0 to 9), then press "clear" once to clear that number, then press & hold "<" until you see "Store". Press "Yes" & carry on from there...

  2. Hide your number when calling (when you don't want the other party to know your number)
    1. After dialing the required number & before pressing "Yes", press ">" twice to choose "Hide Id?" & then press "Yes". Also works for pre-programmed & last dialled numbers, just press "No" & wait for the number to appear on the screen first then follow same procedure.

  3. Check you battery level when phone is off
    1. Just press "No" quickly one time & wait for the battery meter to show up!

  4. Painless redialing
    1. If you're sick & tired of hearing whether your redial gets through, well, don't! The phone will give a short ring automatically when the redial gets through, so put the phone to your ear only after you hear the ring. Note: Only works for redial, not first call!

  5. Save a number into your phone memory (not SIM card)
    1. Follow normal procedures to store a phone number. When prompted to set a storage position, press "#" once (display will show "¤") & key in desired location, or press "#" twice for next available position. GA628 can store 50 phone numbers in memory. Other phones may be able to store more.

  6. Call a phone number from SMS message
    1. Do you know you can do that? You can call from within a SMS message if the phone number is written in it. Example of such a SMS message : Your wife just called. Call her at 7654321 Just scroll the message until the phone number appears on the display, then press "Yes" to call. You can also compose a SMS message with telephone number in it. This is useful when you need to add description to the number. How to key in numbers when composing SMS? Just press & hold the number key until letter changes to number.

  7. Utilize both upper & lower case letters
    1. Makes your phone book look much nicer! Instead of JOHN, PAUL, GEORGE, RINGO; John, Paul, George, Ringo definitely looks much better, right? When keying in the name, press "*" to toggle between upper & lower case letters. You'll get the hang of it in no time. This also works for composing SMS messages!

  8. Editing your phone book
    1. Did your friend change his phone number? Made a mistake in an entry? Now you can edit the names, numbers & storage positions in your phone book. First, activate the extended menu (see secret codes above) & select "EditPh.Bk". Scroll to the desired entry & press "Yes" to edit the name. Press "Yes" again will confirm the name & allow you to edit the phone number. Press "Yes" now will confirm the number & allow you to change the storage position. Press "Yes" to complete the changes & check that "Stored" is displayed... That's all! You can also use this function to change upper case letters to lower case as mentioned earlier.

  9. Checking the storage position of a stored number
    1. When looking at a stored number from the "RecallName" menu, press "*" to see the storage position of that number.

  10. How to customise your Menus (New!!!)
    1. First, activate the extended menu (see secret codes above) & scroll to "Customise". Press "Yes" and you'll see "EditMenus?". Press "Yes" and you'll see "Ring Vol" with blinking icons below. Ignore these icons, Scroll to see other menus and you'll notice that those extended menus like Divert? are blinking. Got it yet? This means that if you want a certain extended menu to be shown even in reduced menu just press & hold "Yes" to stop it blinking. You will see "AcceptPos?", press "Yes" to accept a default position & "No" to select a position yourself. If you press "No" you will see something like "Store->07?". Press desired position number & press "Yes". To correct an entry press "CLR" & select again.

Presto! You can also use this method to rearrange your existing menus.

To disable the menu press & hold "Yes" again to make it blink.

When you have finished whatever you want to change press "No" & you will see "Update?". Press "Yes" to confirm all changes & "No" to discard all changes. Done!

  11. Check the Date/Time stamp of your SMS messages (New!!!)
    1. When you are scrolling through your SMS messages from Read  menu you will see something like 19:58 which is the time stamp on the mail. Press * to toggle to date stamp. Now you can check the exact date & time this mail was sent to you! Easy!

Some of these tips are already included in the instruction booklet. But hey, who reads them anyway? Feel free to contribute your tips to me so that I can put them up here & others can benefit from them.
